FTP NT 4.0 Yosemite Sam
9/27/2004 3:30:49 PM
iis ftp: Since FTP is not recommended on SBS 2003 I thought I'd run it on the legacy
hardware, still running NT 4.0

I followed the steps PRECISELY on
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;201771 . I can log
in as anonymous and can only see root folder ( that's what I want there ). I
created users FTPuser1, FTPuser2 FTPuser3, as prescribed. I created three
folders FTPuser1, FTPuser2, and FTPuser3. I set permissions as described.
As anonymous I get access denied to all three sub folders, ( so far so
good ) I checked, double checked and reset passwords. They are not the
problem, I'm sure.

Now the rub, when I attempt to log using WSFTP in as FTPuser1, I get

USER ftpuser1
331 Password required for ftpuser1.
PASS (hidden)
530 User ftpuser1 cannot log in.

I get no access using command line ftp too. just not as verbose.

I tried createing accounts as local and Global but no good. alway get same
error

I checked and found cleared box for "allow Only anonymous login".

All the docs I read say I can use an account on the local computer. I want
to allow and control some large autocad file exchange, with vendors and
clients, keeping them anonymous to each other with generic folder names.

This server was once a domain Controller for now defunct domain.
I did use the "local account for users from untrusted domains"
But I did not find the log on locally in user manager for domains.
What do I do in the profile about a home Dir. I set it to local path and
set user permissions there too.
and made them Virtual disrectory.

Did you give the accounts the right to log on locally?

Still doesn't do it. There is no option to log on locally.

I'll try the scripts to set domain when I arrive in the morning.

Re: FTP NT 4.0 Almost there Yosemite Sam

All,

Thanks for sticking with me on this one. I appreciate the help from each
and everyone.

I'm almost there... I demoted server from PDC to Standalone server. then
all users become local users and login works fine.

Next When using ftp client on linux box to connect I get connected fine. I
do get an error after connecting when I try to DIR or to GET or PUT. It
goes into passive mode and my Linksys doesn't like that. Can I force it not
to go to Passive mode? Can I open a "Safe" range in linksys firewall? what
is my best option?

User profile settings have no bearing in NT4's FTP. See:

How To Set Up an FTP Site So That Users Log Onto Their Folders:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;201771

If you have not reinstalled the OS, it is still a domain controller,
you can't change NT4 without a reinstall. Go to User Manager,
Policies, User Rights and you'll find the Log on Locally right.

demote ? wow! that's a dangerous process :)
FTP modes are determine from client site. the server just response
accordingly.
For example, in IE to force it to active mode, checked enable folder view
How To Configure Internet Explorer to Use Both the FTP PORT Mode and PASV
Mode in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309816

Next, regarding the passive port range, this is only available from W2k SP4
(IIS5.0) and IIS6.
So, your option is to ensure users only uses active mode.

Or, allocate budget for upgrade :)

Thanks for the Policies tip. I knew I had seen it somewhere. Wow NT 4.0
haven't used it much lately.

I did find a tool that claims to be able to demote DC to standalone server
and Promote into another domain or leave it as a standalone server. I used
it and the results are a server that is indistinguishable from a standalone
server. At least I can't tell the difference...... But then I couldn't
find the log on locally policy either ;-) http://utools.com/UPromote.asp

Thanks to all who helped. I am working as desired now.

UPromote works well and suits your needs fine.
