iis ftp : ftp member server authentication

Is there a way to drop the domain name and just use username for
authentication. I have Win2K member Server running ftp services. I have no
problems loging into ftp site if i use DomainName\UserName. I know that by
promoting the server to a dc would fix that, but i don't see a reason for an
ftp server to have that role. is there anotherway to force the users to
