iis ftp : FTP Server problems

Hello Everyone,

I'm running WinXP Pro w/SP2 and have been trying to get an FTP server to
work properly in the passive mode. I have several questions. Please feel
free to refer me to the appropriate newsgroup it this one is not it!

First Issue: I'm behind a broadband router so when things didn't work, the
first thing I was told was that the WinXP IIS FTP server would not work since
it could not be set up to use the "real" IP address from my ISP, but only the
local IP address (192.168...) from the localnet side of the broadband router.
Whether that's actually true or not, things started working better when I
installed a 3rd party FTP server (Cerberus FTP Server).

Second Issue: I'm now able to connect to the FTP server and download files
from my local machine using the "real" IP address using the various versions
of WS_FTP. However, Internet Explorer will not connect properly. It tells
me that "Windows cannot access this folder. ...Details: A connection with
the server cannot be established." I've made sure that IE is set to the
passive mode but there must be some other setting that's wrong.

Third: I can't get any FTP client to conenct at all with the Windows
firewall turned on, even though I have gone into the Advanced Settings and
enabled the FTP Server checkbox.

So the point I'm at now is:
3rd party FTP server;
3rd party firewall;
No one (including me) can access the server using IE;
Some people (but not all) can access me using WS_FTP;

I'll bet there's one simple setting that would make everything just start
working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray

And I'll bet there isn't :)

I had a hell of a time with it but reckon that's because things are a bit
broken both ends :)

Hit this page for a start, I found it helpful, Passive is likely to be worse
than ever to get set up.

http://www.slacksite.com/ftp.html

Also, I tried just about everything (I'd had little trouble with 2000 and
IIS 5 so figured it would be the same ha!) including removing all IIS and
reinstalling with defaults, and that worked but IE is still harder to use
for testing than other FTP clients. I don't know why that seems to be the
case.

Anyway that page may enable you to work something out - I found I was fixing
one thing but breaking another :)

Charlie
