iis ftp:
A Clean install of WinServer2003. IIS6.0
I Can login and display ftp site\Folder over LAN using ftp://Server_Name.
Cannot get to site using IE with any combination of settings for passive and
folder view settings.

Using command line FTP I get the following:

C:\Path....>ftp 68.253.xxx.xx
Connected to 68.253.xxx.xx.
220-Microsoft FTP Service
220 Testing My FTP Server
User (68.253.xxx.xx:(none)): administrator
331 Password required for administrator.
Password:
230 User administrator logged in.

......Then I try a "dir" and get the following;

ftp> dir
500 Invalid PORT Command.
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls.
Aborting any active data connections...
425 Can't open data connection.
421 Timeout (120 seconds): closing control connection.
421 Terminating connection.
Connection closed by remote host.
ftp> quit

IE gives similar errors Invlid Port, check permissions etc and disconnects
and never shows the welcome massages or banners.

Always test ftp connection with ftp.exe first.
From the output you posted, it looks like you are having NAT issue,
FTP Error: 500 Invalid PORT Command

Bernard,
Are you saying that by executing ftp.exe and attempting to access the site
using ftp:> open ftp-site will return different results than loading from
the c:> ftp sitename?
Note, I am able to connect to my site using IE on the LAN as well. It's only
from remote locations that I cant get in. I have a LinkSys forwarding port 21
requests to the server IP.

I'm just learning all this so excuse my ignorance....

Thanks for your help

This issue is related to your router and not really IIS. as ftp'ing from the
same LAN, you can connect without problem, hence ftp is working correctly
and I don't think you should going back to w2k.

If I remember correctly, there's a support page in linksys which talk about
port fowarding with IIS ftp service, you might want to google and find that
article.

Well I tried ftp.exe and about every way possible to connect and got the same
result. I then setup the server (without the router) and tried conneting. Got
errors about remote host dropping/refusing the connection but not the Port
Error message.

I am still able to connect over the LAN using ftp.exe, ftp:> Open
server_name but never with the external IP address. I also did a firmware
update and that did not help. I'm at work and dont have the ftp logs to post
but I can do that later.

You think I should go back to W2K Server. I prob have a better chance at
this with it due to all the security extras in Win Server 2003. I'm just
needing it to occasionally serve a few files not for major public traffic.

What do ya think?
