iis ftp: Steps for XP Pro is similar in those KBs that Jeff posted, however take note
that XP Pro IIS has a concurrent 10 inbound connections limit. On the other
hand, why not upload your photo to some online album sharing website, I'm
sure there's couple in the net, so google around.

I'm interested in setting up an .FTP server on a PC in my LAN so relatives &
friends can download photos & videos. Maybe IIS is the way to go, perhaps
not. I don't want anything that's really complicated. I'm open to
suggestions of alternatives. And, I'd really appreciate your posting direct
links to any easy-to-read and understand documentation on IIS to tell me
what it does, how to install it to provide me with an FTP server.

Thanks, Jeff!

Please forgive my limited information. I am a 40+-year veteran of the
computer filed, primarily focused on programming, though most has been on
mainframes & minis. No programming of PCs. I have worked a lot with my
LAN. All computers here run WinXP Pro SP2 I do not have Windows server
2003 or any other specific server software. So, I would appreciate any
further information that is specific to WinXP Pro.

FTP is easy, but we don't know whether you have the admin skills or
anything that might be needed. You might want a tird party FTP
product that is simply installed and running.

Beyond that, not knowing what operating system a "PC in my LAN" runs,
best you can get is genral directions. Take a look at these and see

Yes, you can have firewall one while allow ftp traffic.
This kb focus on http, but you can refer to it for http.
Web server functionality may not work correctly after you install Windows XP
Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=883607

As regard to your IP address issue, typicall - I don't think ISP give you a
static ip unless you subscribe to their business packages or etc. normally,
with adsl connection, what we do is we have the router/nat device forward
those incoming request to your internal host runnin gon internal ip address.

For remote user, they will visit your site via the public ip, when the
request hits the router, it will get forward to the respestive host. As for
the detail on how to configure this, you need to refer to your router
documentation.

Re: Need Simple FTP Service - Two More Questions AA Smith

Thanks, Lance!

I really appreciate your help.

I installed a third-party FTP application. However to get it to work
(testing with another computer in my LAN) I had to shut down Windows
Firewall. Is there some way that I can leave the Firewall running and still
let folks outside my LAN access files in the FTP Server?

And, in order for them to access my LAN, do I have to have a static IP
address. My current IP addresses are like 192.168.1.1. I'm not sure if or
how I might use them as alternatives, but my DNS Server addresses start with
numbers like 83 and 204.

Again, thanks!

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for your help, Bernard. I'm aware of those services. However, I
occasionally
need to transfer data files that are pretty sizable also, so setting up an
FTP here seems
like the best approach.

Incidentally, I've setup FTP and quickly found that the WinXP Pro SP2
firewall blocks
access to my FTP Server. How can I permit access to resources in the FTP
without closing the firewall?

Also: is it imperative that I have a static IP address on the computer in
our LAN that has FTP installed? Or, more to the point, CAN I have a static
IP address on the one computer in our LAN that has FTP installed? Do ISPs
even issue static IP address that way? Or only to the address of the LAN's
modem/router?

For what it's worth, this LAN has a new LinkSys router that also offers
secure wireless access.

The router that's connected to your internet connection should be able to
give you the WAN address that people outside your LAN will have to use.
192.168.xxx.xxx addresses like you described won't work off the LAN. These
are reserved for LANS and won't route over the internet.

Most ISP change these WAN addresses from time to time so you won't be able
to guarantee an FTP server address to last very long. This will most likely
confuse relatives so they can't be bothered to use it. To get a static WAN
IP you usually have to pay extra. Alternatively you can use a service like
this
http://www.dyndns.com/ and create a domain name.

For free you can get a website from Yahoo if you can tolerate ads, but for
as little as $5 a month you can get a hosted site and get your own domain
name from www.dotearth.com or somewhere which cost $35 a year last I looked.
If you family is anything like mine they will look if there's an icon but
not bother to chase your server :)

As to access there are some routers which cannot translate FTP to any port
other than 21 so you may need to stick with default settings (although using
another port can help with security). Your router may be blocking WAN access
as well as your firewall. Look in the instructions for "Port Forwarding" and
set up static forwarding for port 21 to machine with IP 192.168.xxx.xxx
where xxx.xxx points to your FTP server machine. I would make sure this is
set up first before playing with the windows firewall - in both cases you'll
probably have to test it from work or some place off your own LAN (Even the
dial up next door).

I hope this means something to you, I am certainly no expert but find an FTP
server handy when I am away from home.
