I have a web server owned and setup by the ISP UK2. I have set up an
ftp site on it. I can log into it from the command prompt and windows
explorer. However, in windows explorer when the status line has shown
"getting contents of folder" for ten to fifteen seconds a timeout
message appears.

"An Error Occured opening that folder on the ftp server. make sure you
have permission to access that folder"

"details: The operation timed out"

I am logging in as the local administrator; the advanced setting in the
browser allows browsing of ftp folders; I can browse the ftp site on
the server itself using ie through terminal services.

The server is win2k and fully up to date from woindows update the
client is windows XP sp 2 and similarly patched right up to date.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Windows explorer ? I would assume the same if you try connecting with IE.
try
How To Configure Internet Explorer to Use Both the FTP PORT Mode and PASV
Mode in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309816

checked the - Enable Folder View for FTP sites option to make IE an active
mode ftp client, then see if the problem still exists.

Ok. now if you try IE and connect locally, does it works?
ftp://localhost/

For active mode to work, it needs tcp 21/20, passive mode it's another
story, refer

Firstly, thankyou for taking the time to respond to my post.

I have all the above set, view ftp folders and passive mode. I have
even disabled the client firewall to test if the port is blocked on
the client.

The only firewall on the client is the windows XP sp2 firewall. The
server is win2k but has no firewall as yet other than the uk2 routers.
I think we can safely assume that uk2 allows 21 and 20 for their
dedicated server custromers.

Perplexed!

It works now...I did a windows update, but I feel It may have been the
sever reboot that did the trick!

Thanks again for your help, it's not the first reboot I've tried but
somehow this time it worked! Not intellectually rigorous maybe but
effective. Does the setting of passive mode require a reboot?

Interesting...no sooner had I posted the all clear than something
happened on the rebooted server that took the listing away. Curioser
and curioser!
