Troubles with WGET.EXE Kayman
8/20/2005 12:00:00 AM
iis ftp:
I am new to this forum and my technical know how with respect to computers
is limited. I use Win32 XP-Pro SP2, 512MB.

I am unable to run downloaded WGET.EXE based program (batch) files (virus
scanning engines) after rebooting my computer and suspect that the values
for accepting these type of programs may require to be reset.

This is quoted from the downloading instructions:
"NOTE: You may have to disable your FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through
your FireWall to allow the OS FTP utility to download the needed files".

My Windows FireWall is always disabled as I use Norton 2003 Internet
Security & AntiVirus. At the start of the downloading operation of the
WGET.EXE the Norton FireWall requested permission to let these files go
through which I granted. According to a download monitor (an indicator to
see status and progress of downloading operation) the files were downloaded
successfully and I was able to use the scanning engine right after the
download. But when rebooting the computer the scanning engine responds with
an error message "c:\AV-CLS\McAfee\update.ini not opened for READ, error
code [0]"

I re-downloaded the WGET.EXE files several times with a disabled FireWall
but with the same results as mentioned above.

I communicated my plight to the author of the WGET.EXE program files but he
is unable to assist as according to him "I am the only one experiencing this
problem".

Could the experts in this group please help me.

Thank you in advance for your attention and kind assistance.

Errr. this is IIS FTP server discussion group. Not sure how to support your
wget.exe.
what I can suggest now is to check if the data file downloaded is usable ? I
mean did u check the size, etc. scan it ?
next try ftp.exe and manually get the file, and see if the virus engine able
to use it.

Thanks for response. The program file definitely was usable. After download
I was able to use it. But couldn't after rebooting the computer. Anyway, all
this is quite an extraordinary occurance and may decide to re-install Win
XP.
Thanks again and best regards,

Mm.. what change after the reboot? can you make a copy of the file after you
downloaded? then try reboot and present the copied file to the virus engine?

I downloaded MULTI_AV.EXE (which are three virus scanning engines) from the
URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe
It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script
Interpreter { http://kixtart.org Kixtart is CareWare } three batch files,
five Kixart scripts, one Link (.LNK) file, PDF instruction file and two
utilities; UNZIP.EXE and WGET.EXE. It will simplify the process of using;
Sophos, Trend and McAfee Anti-Virus Command Line Scanners tom remove viruses
and various other malware.

According to the downloading progress indicator/monitor, the downloading
operation was successful. And right after downloading of each virus scanning
engine I was able to scan. However when I rebooted the computer, opened the
folder called C:\AV-CLS (AntiVirus Command Line Scanner) and double clicked
the Start Menu to run one of the scanning engines an error message will show
up. In case of McAfee it says "c\AV-CSL\Mcafee\update.ini not opened for
READ, error code[0].

It's a rather complex issue and hope this clarifies the problem.
Best regards,

Well, I did mention this to the author but received no constructive
response. According to him, "I am the only one experiencing this kind of
problem", which makes it even more difficult for me to get suitable
technical advice (especially where I am located), oh well. Anyway, I really
appreciate your time and efforts for looking into this.
With very best regards,

Yupe. complicated indeed. but I'm afraid you need to talk to the author of
the tool or the vendor for the file corruption as this is beyond IIS ftp
scope. Hope you understand my view.
