FTP Performance Issue Oliver

Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a performance issue when using FTP with a
network share?

I'm using FTP with the home directory pointing to a share on another
machine; when I try to download files from the server, I can only get a
download speed of around 120KB/sec; however, if I move the home directory to
be on the local server I can get a speed of around 400KB/sec which is closer
to the maximum download speed of my ADSL line.

Both servers are situated in a dedicated hosting centre and are connected
via 100MB switch and have a maximum burst speed of 100MB/sec. which should be
more than enough to max out my ADSL line on a download

Any ideas???

Thanks

How many other machines are sharing that "switch"? If the switch has more
traffic than it is designed for your going to get that slow down. If you
had the servers directly plugged in then I would start wondering about
something else. So basically I accuse "congestion on the switch" as a
possible curplit.

Thanks for the reply Tom.

We have just upgraded to a 1GB switch and still have the same performance
problem. It seems the problem is inherent to IIS 6 and the way the FTP
service streams files from a network share.
