iis ftp : Windows XP FTP - access denied

I am getting an "access denied" message when I try to PUT a file to my
WindowsXP FTP site.

I right click on the "ftp root" directory and click "sharing and
security" . On the sharing tab, "share this folder on the network" is
clicked. On the "web sharing" tab, the alias "ftproot" has access
permissions read and write checked.

But I still get the "access denied" error.

Why am I getting this error when using FTP to PUT to my WindowsXP FTP
site?

thanks,

-Steve

does the user has permissions on the files/folders ?
try verify the write permissions using IIS MMC.

I am not sure :)

I go to admin tools, IIS, right click on "default FTP Site" ...
on the security accounts tab, the FTP site operators are administrators
and ASPNET. But that section of the panel is grayed. I cant add or
remove operator privledges. ( I am logged in as administrator )

In windows explorer, when I right click the FTPROOT directory and click
sharing and security, I dont see any options or panels for granting
individual users rights to the directory. ( I am logging into the FTP
site as "administrator".

appreciate the help,

-Steve

it is easy now that I know how to do it! I was not seeing the file
permissions because my windows XP "professional" was set for simplified
sharing. And I am really not this stupid, but the home directory tab
had read and write permissions unchecked.

thanks so much for your help,

Ok.
a) IIS FTP setting
- Open IIS MMC
- Right mouse on the FTP site, select property
- At the home directory tab, ensure 'write' permission is checked.

b) Configure NTFS in XP, read
How to set, view, change, or remove file and folder permissions in Windows
XP

just to illustrate the chasm between those who know and those who dont
have a clue, when you said to "open IIS MMC" I was not certain what you
were saying. In WindowsXP I knew to go to control panel, admin tools,
IIS. The IIS admin tabbed dialog says nothing in its title that
indicates this is the IIS MMC. Only when I clicked help ... and saw
"about mmc" did I know I was at the right place.

As a programmer I love MSFT. As a user I am a bit imtimidated by the
difficulty of using its software for the first time. ( I am downright
terrified of using Linux for anything new ) The MSFT practice of
greying the options and not telling you why the option is not available
is a pain. Then in this case, since "simplified access" was enabled,
the secure tab was not even displayed for me to set individual user
rights to a directory. I was lost.

The IBM AS400 system I work on has a nice feature that helps with this
sort of thing. Every admin screen has an "F21=assistance level" option.
When you change your assistance level from "user" to "intermediate" to
"advanced" the admin screen changes to provide more options. IBM of
course is killing the AS400 by mercilessly overcharging its captive
customers for the privledge of running an OS it has not improved in 10
yrs on modern hardware. Beware you Linux open source people who think
IBM is your friend!

Oh.. my bad. This is standard way of how we refer the IIS management
interface...
It's full name in XP is - Internet Information Services

MMC is microsoft management console which most of the product uses to host
their management feature in the common standard UI.
