With IE7, you can click on a link to a FILE on an FTP site and it will
prompt for your credentials and then proceed to ask to save or open
the file.

With IE6, you get a "page cannot be displayed"... However, with IE6,
you can follow a link to a FOLDER on an FTP site and it prompts you
for credentials and then proceeds to that folder.

What is it that is keeping IE6 from working when clicking on an FTP
link that goes directly to a file? Is it a limitation of IE6 or
something else entirely?

That's a bug. What is preventing you from upgrading? IE7 is a little odd,
but way safer and better than IE6. IE6 appears to have lots and lots of
problems with FTP.
