iis ftp : External access to FTP...

Steven Sinclair
6/18/2007 8:14:01 AM
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 SP2
IIS FTP - Port 8064
NetGear Router with Port Forwarding enabled for multiple ports (including
8064)

When I attempt to connect to the FTP on my LAN, I have no problems
whatsoever. I can connect with any of the 12 users I've configured and all
are forwarded to the appropriate login folders and have the appropriate
accesses as configured.

When I attempt to connect to the FTP from outside my LAN, I have all sorts
of issues...I have yet to make one successful connection. Every time, I'm
receiving the following errors via WS_FTP...

500 Invalid PORT Command.
! Failed "port":
!Retrieve of folder listing failed (0)

The log states I've connected, but I'm never prompted for usernames or
passwords. If I attempt to use Windows FTP, I can't even "see" the IP to
connect to.

The real interesting part about this issue is that I'm also running multiple
web servers and email servers with no issues at all.

Any ideas?

If you google the old threads, you will find this is related to
FTP Error: 500 Invalid PORT Command
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=281193

while some claimed after upgrading the router firmware fix this, yet some
claimed this is not working. so good luck.

Thanks for the reply, Bernard.

I had found the link you've referred to, but didn't see how it applied to my
situation besides the fact that I'm not utilizing the default ports of 20 and
21. Unfortunately, there are no firmware updates available for my router, so
I guess I'm stuck, eh? Are there any other ways around this issue?

Thanx.

Also, I forgot to mention that I can successfully log in to the FTP
externally, but after that, when I issue any commands...even a simple DIR, my
connection freezes (this is when the PORT errors occur), and I cannot do
anything further.

It happens like this...

me = ftp
me = open ftp.mydomain.com 8064
server = Connected to ftp.mydomain.com
server = 220
server = User (ftp.mydomain.com:(none)):
me = myusername
server = 331 Password required for myusername
server = Password:
me = mypassword
server = 230 Logged on
me = dir
server = 200 Port command successful
server = 150 Opening data channel for directory list.

At this point, my FTP session is frozen and I can only CTRL-C out and
restart the connection anew.

Any other ideas?

Thanx again.

Yes, but this is usenet. Not some chat line.

Average response time is somewhere around 2 days. After that, it's safe to
assume nobody is going to answer the post.

Yes. that's what I have seen in the past. MS is claiming NAT device issue.

You can try ring MS support for this.
