I have Windows XP home and get my email using high speed
cable and Outlook 6. I am getting well over 100 ads a
day via Messenger. Can I just disable Messenger to stop

You probably want to run a personal firewall. The basic one that comes with
XP can get you by.

Then, I would do some lockdown of services. I would disable the Messenger
service if you don't use it. Services like printing sometimes give
update/status via the Messenger service, but I don't think you miss out a
whole lot.

You need a firewall. Check out www.sygate.com and www.zonealarm.com to look
for some security! Messenger spam in itself isn't harmful, but it's a sign
that your computer is open to possibly bad activity. Consider messenger
spam a forewarning
