What authentication methods are you using?

Is the LAN part of a domain?

Goto:

--> 'Administrative Tools'

--> 'Internet Information Services'

and check what authentication methods you're using.

Yes the LAN is part of a domain. I have it set to allow
anonymous authentication.

Do you have Integrated Windows authentication enabled too?

If this is box is checked your credentials will be sent
automatically when logged in to the domain on the LAN,
otherwise you'll be prompted for this info when accessing
outside the LAN.

Hello,
If you have both Anonymous and Integrated authentication enabled, Anonymous
will be tried first. The fact that you are being prompted for credentials
means that Anonymous is failing and Integrated is being used.
1) Confirm if the IUSR account (for anonymous) has NTFS permissions on the
content
2) Check the event logs to see if the account is locked out by any chance
3) If 1 and 2 don't help, reset the password for the IUSR account and see
if this helps. Follow the steps in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297989 (only for
IUSR account, not for IWAM account).

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,
