401.3 ACL Error

401.3 ACL Error Randy Faulkner

iis security:
From a new install of IIS 6.0, I removed integrated
security and kept just anonymous user access selected.
Bringing up localhost or the web URL itself, I get this
error. I can manually type in a HTML file in the URL
under the root and have it display. Checked the obvious
anonymous user NTFS folder rights, default documents

It's just the default iisstart.htm page that I'm thinking
should display (with NTFS read access for the
IUSR_ComputerName account).

Ken: I got it now. I saw I had to apply the
IUSR_ComputerName permissions from within IIS manager.
Thanks.

What are the NTFS permissions on the files in question? What are the file
types?

Cheers

I don't think so...you should be able to set the NTFS permissions from
Explorer, not IIS Manager.

In IIS Manager
- you need to ensure that "Allow Anonymous Authentication" is enabled
- you also need to ensure that the IIS Web Permission "Read" is enabled
(allows content to be read - required before NTFS ACLs are checked)

Cheers
Ken

I wonder if we are having the same problem, and if so have you figured it out
yet? Server 2003, IIS 6.0. I can go to my own site fine, but internet users
are prompted for username and password (401.3). Here is the odd part: I am
using virtual directories to run separate sites. All three of them worked
just fine, until a few days ago. I have checked the IIS permissions, as well
as NTFS, and registry. They all seem to match. Now 2 out of 3 sites works
fine, and the third returns the error. From the Sharepoint administration
site--Checkserver health page, I checked the "repair" box on the "tighten
security" box, and like an idiot, I did it twice. I wonder if that could be
the problem, and if so how do I fix it? I also get persistent errors in the
event viewer: DCOM error Event ID 10002 Acess denied attempting to launck
DCOM server svr(00020906-0000-0000-c000-0000000046; also MSFPSE error:
ID=1000: Source=FrontPage 5.0-MS FP Server Extensions: error 3005f: unable to
read config. for MS IIS; and Info 1000 MSFPSE error reading IIS default Vroot
info. Also I have assigned full control to admin and sys. Help!!! The last
thing is that I am running a stand alone computer as a domain controller, and
the domain name is the same as the default first name site.
