iis security : Secure Communications buttons disabled - can't request certificate

Hello all,

We are running IIS6 on windows 2k3. Our network guy has set up
certificate server, and is trying to set up SSL on the OWA website (at
first, but we will need to do so on other websites as well). In the
properties of the web, however, if we go to Directory Security all of
the buttons under Secure Communications are disabled, and we can't see
any way to set up the cert. I have never noticed the buttons to be
disabled before.

Checking another pure web server I see the same thing, (i.e. not one
with exchange or CA on it) buttons disabled.

This is trying to access through the mmc on my machine. Remote Desktop
into the server and running IIS admin there yields only the Edit button
being enabled, not Server Certificate or View Certificate.

Okay, well so I looked into it further and the problem with not seeing
the Server Certificate button enabled was due to him trying to enable it
on a virtual directory, not the web site itself. Problem solved there.

However I have to wonder why I have to RD into the machine to access
those buttons, as they still do not show up when I use the MMC snapin
from my local machine.

Hi Scott,

Please make sure you log on as local administrator role to use the
IIS mmc first. If this is not the cause, please look at the following
