iis security : IIS6 Integrated Authentication Question

I have an intranet web site running under IIS 6.0 on Server 2003 in a 2000 AD
Domain.
For Directory Security I have ONLY Integrated Authenticaion enabled.
If I browse to the site by IP, for example, http://192.168.1.2 I will be
prompted to enter a username password and domain.
If I make a HOST entry for the above IP or add it to DNS and browse to, for
example, http://intranet the Intergrated Authentication works!

I'm ok with this, but would really like to know why it works this way.

Thanks in advanced!!

This sounds like IE-behavior regarding how dottedIP address is classified.

Thanks David, that was it! Really odd that dottedIP address need to be
specifically added to the Local Intranet Sites. Really annoying too!
