IE prompts for username password when saving excel file opened in dave

iis security: Hi all,

I'm having a problem with IIS server. I'm got a collection of excel
spreadsheets and word documents available on a website. The files are for
viewing only (i.e., read only). When I click on a link to download a word
file it prompts me whether I want to save it or open it. If I save it it
works fine. If I open it, it opens in IE and if I try save the document
locally it does it no problem.

However, when I do the same thing with the excel documents, I can open them
fine in IE but when I try save them locally, I get prompted for a username
and password for the web server. Now I don't want that to happen, I'm only
trying to save it locally! If I hit cancel, then I can save it locally. For
me its not a problem but other users think the system is broken and its
annoying that it does that when I have only given permissions in IIS to be
read-only.

If any can help that would be great,

P.S.
Looking for server side fixes.....

Cheers

This is a client-side problem.

Cheers, thanks I just tried it and it works. However, it should't be a client
side issue but thats the way its designed and I suppose we have to live with
it. Thanks for your help,

No problem.

however, it has to be a client-side issue because the server will always
challenge for username/password when required to authenticate -- it is up to
the client to know how to satisfy that requirement without popping up the
password dialog unnecessarily...
