iis smtp nntp : SMTP Server just stopped working

Hello,

My IIS SMTP Server was working fine and then for no apparent reason has just
stopped sending messages. In IIS the SMTP service is still up, and I get no
error message when I send an e-mail. However, my e-mail messages just don't
reach their destination. I have carried out several tests to verify this.
The messages just "vanish".

I have tried using IISReset to solve the problem, but this has not helped.

I am using Win XP, IIS 5.1 and Outlook Express.

What is happening? How do I get SMTP working again?

Thanks in advance.

Jerome Smith

How do you know it *isn't* working? Just because your mail doesn't
reach the destination isn't an indicator of your SMTP server failing.
Try:

HOW TO: Test Windows 2000 IIS SMTP Services Manually
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;286421

And look at the logs to see what may have happened.

Thanks Jeff. I looked at the logs and my messages are just sitting in the
queue without being sent. What could the reason for this be?

Well, I got one error message in the Windows Application Log. (It's in
Spanish because my WinXP is in Spanish), but it simply states that the
remote server did not respond to a connection attempt.

Is this a DNS problem? How do I solve it?

Thanks again for your time.

Normally this is a DNS error. But the logs should show connection
attempts for the messages at least.

It may be. You need to ensure that the SMTP server can resolve the MX
record for the destination. Use NSLookup to test, and hit the DNS
groups if you can't resolve the name correctly.

The other possibilities are a network connection issue, or the
destination may be down. Normally if it refuses a connection it will
tell you, but in this case the end server isn't responding, either
because you can't get to the end server or it's not functioning.
