Hi,

We have a Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Service Pack=20
3 and IIS 5. We have hosted an application which sends=20
mail through IIS's SMTP service. Now, whenever I try=20
sending mail to an external domain through the=20
application, the mail stays in the Queue folder and does=20
not get sent. The Event Log gives me this:

=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: smtpsvc
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4000
Date: 8/24/2004
Time: 3:45:15 PM
User: N/A
Computer: XSERVER
Description:
Message delivery to the remote domain 'x.x.co.in' failed=20
for the following reason: An SMTP protocol error occurred.

Data:
0000: d7 02 04 c0 =D7..=C0=20

=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

I searched using the Event ID and source and got a few=20
results that told me that forwarders were not enabled in=20
DNS. I enabled forwarders and mentioned my ISP's DNS=20
server IPs. I restarted the DNS service and the SMTP=20
service. The mails still don't go.

I tried googling for the following string: "An SMTP=20
protocol error occured" and all the results on the web=20
said that it could be because of Exchange Server. We do=20
not use Exchange Server. What could be the problem? What=20
could be the solution???

Prem,

Have you configured your SMTP server to send a copy of underivable-reports
to email address? I find that the undeliverable emails are more informative
than the event log and may help find the exact problem your smtp server is
having.

Harjinder,

The undelivered mails are not informative at all. All it=20
says is "Message could not be sent."

I think I've zeroed in on the problem. I noticed that=20
mails sent to VSNL emails do not seem to go. I think it's=20
because our outgoing mails are not authenticated by any=20
mail server. I guess VSNL rejects such mails. Will try to=20
see if i can authenticate outgoing mails. Thanks!

Prem
