iis smtp nntp : SMTP Relay

I have a Win 2K server running SMTP setup to relay mail
for several dozen domains. 95% of this mail is getting
relayed to a single server, running sendmail. On average,
approx 12,000/per hour.

Sendmail is configured to reject connections when the load
average reaches 5. As a result, the more SMTP
connections, the higher the load average. When it begins
to reject connections, it takes several additional seconds
before it can resume accepting connections.

Currently, the queue is growing to an unmanageable
amount.

Would it be recommended, in this instance, to set a
maximum number of connections per domain -- seeing as too
many connections cause the destination mail server to
reject connections -- and increase the number of messages
per connection?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It would be recommended to change SendMail to allow a higher load, or
to split the mail between SendMail servers if you need the volume and
can't adjust the settings on the one server.

First time I've seen Microsoft's SMTP accused of being too fast for
SendMail... :)
