iis smtp nntp : Exchange SMTP service stops and disables itself

I'm writing this on behalf of a colleague overseas.

On a daily basis (up to a few times a day) his Exchange 2000 server for the
last 2 years, the SMTP service Stops and sets the Startup type to 'Disable'.
Anyone know what could be causing this?

Hi sysadmin,

It is not Exchange or any other Microsoft Product that I am aware of. My
guess is that they have some security software in their environment that is
scanning the computers and turning the SMTP service off. The key to this is
the fact that it sets the service to disabled. Any type of normal failure
would not cause this.

I would investigate with the network/server team to try and determine what
software they are running that is doing this.

Hope this Helps,

Sounds almost like a script is running shutting it down. Is it consistent
in terms of the times that it shuts down?
