I have IIS installed on XP Pro and everything works except email. I need to
know where the utility is for configuring SMTP. It is whatever IIS version
that comes with XP Pro. I dont ever recall seeing a version number.

well, iof it's not installed, go through add/remove programs and add the IIS
service (windows components). Then you'll need to configure it. What version
of IIS? and are you o a domestic broadband setup? many providers block port
25 these days, so not much point using it in that case...

it's 5.1

it's administered with the same tool as the web server - go to start->run
and type inetmgr

Thanks for the reply Jason. I am really very confused with this mail
delivery thing. I created this IIS Server on XP Pro so that I could test my
PHP pages before I load them to the internet. The PHP script is for a user
to register and login. When I fill in the "register form", the data
transfers to the database but the email does not get sent to the user that is
registering.

I went into the properties of the default server as you suggested using
"inetmgr" and lt shows the outbound connection as TCP port 25 and under
advanced delivery it shows "DEACON2" as the Fully Qualified Domain Name. So,
does this make the outbound mail name deacon@DEACON2.com ?

First test your SMTP outside of your apllication. See:

HOW TO: Test Windows 2000 IIS SMTP Services Manually
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;286421

Then check the SMTP log files to see what's happening. It's likely as
simple as your ISP blocking port 25, or a firewall doing the same.

I saw this information while trying to solve my own problem today I
have a server at 1and1 and having problems receiving mail. I tried
the above steps from the server and the mail comes through. If I send
e-mail from my computer i eventually get a bounce message saying the
server couldn't be found.

It seems to me that if my mail works and the above steps work then
there is something between our server and the world that is blocking
port 25. In testing I can't follow the above instructions from my
home computer but don't know if it should work or not. Does my
assumption seem correct or am I missing something?

It sounds like your ISP is blocking port 25 to keep you from running a
mail server.
