if i twas only one user, I'd suspect that the user made an error, and
not the emial system. If multiple, independent users, then maybe a
backup was improperly restored? Or a virus?

I have a Win2k server which has IIS SMTP running on top of it. Last Friday,
my users told me they received a dozen of old e-mail (around 1 year ago) sent
to me by that IIS SMTP gateway. It is very strange!

How can I trace back and identify the root cause of this unexpected SMTP
behavior?

It is the case which multiple reciepts receives many e-mail sent out from the
same sender on a particular instance. The sender confirmed that she didn't
send out those old e-mails.

No restore was executed during that period, and the server is always
protected with real-time antivirus.

Any idea?

Yes, but limited. IIS should have purged out old emails as soon as
they were sent (the first time). This might happen if the first time
they were marked as not sent but actually then sent, so they remained
in the queue. Then at the present time for some reason SMTP picked
them up again and resent them not realizing they were both already
sent and way too old.

But that's a guess at best!

Is this still happening? Or was it a 'one shot deal'?

No, the problem didn't occur again. However, users always expect you to
figure out the root cause of the problem. Any idea to trace the problem.

After the fact? No, none worth the effort. I doubt the effort is
justified either. Unless it happens again, I'd just tell them that it
appears to hvae been a:

1. Software glitch.
2. Problem with the Intenet
3. Fault of the software provider (you know who... <g>)
4. Some external force.

Pick any one reason to use for this problem...

To prevent future problems you may want to keep an eye on the various
queue folders for stuck files or emails. Also, purge them as
appropriate, especially the badmail folder which IMHO seems to grow by
leaps and bounds without restraint! <bg>
