Exchange vs SMTP

iis smtp nntp:
We have a Windows 2003 server with IIS6 and have been struggling with SMTP
and POP. The SMTP Virtual appears to be working fine and POP3 MMC shows the
POP3 Service working. However, when I test mail functionality via a .php
program I get an error. I then checked via telnet and received errors
connecting to port 25.

Before we spend another day or two troubleshooting this issue, we like input
on the following question:

When hosting internal 'PAY AS YOU GO' boxes, would it be better to use the
internal SMTP and POP, Exchange 2003, or outside product like Pegasus Mail?

We expect to use these boxes as Web Hosting servers and Internal Intranet
Servers.

Well, what do you need? SMTP and POP work, but they aren't full
featured mail servers. Exchange has many features, but might be over
kill. Mercury Mail (the mail server by the Pegasus client folks) is a
mail server for internet SMTP and POP mail. There are many others
available as well.

All work, all have good and bad points. You'll need to see which
meets your needs, not the least of which would be your being able to
make it work.

If you want help getting POP working, you'll need to post the error
messages.

Thanks for your reply Jeff. The control panel we use to manage our sites
uses Mail Enable. We do already own Exchange. I was wondering if there
would be any benefit to using Exchange for our Web Hosting customers over the
free apps out there.

There would be benefits if your customers needed features in Exchange.
Do they need shared calendars? Contact lists? To use the global
catalog for addresses? Outlook Web Access?

The only one who can determine if there is a benefit is you. I
suspect the answer is no, simply frokom the expense of licensing, but
that's not something I can say.
