If they don't get delivered, they sit in the queue until a delivery is retried. They're retried at expansing intervals, so the first retry is like 15 minutes, the next is an hour, the next in two more hours, then four more hours, eight, 16 and so on until maximum retries is met and they are retruned undeliverable.
I keep getting messages from my server saying "SMTP Server Remote Queue Length Alert" and the message says "A large number of messages are pending in the e-mail server send queue" When I look in the queue 90% of these are messages being forwarded to blackberries and they are simply not sending. As a work around I've been restarting the SMTP mail queue and they immediately send out but that's after the queue is an hour or so behind. Anyone else having issues with blackberries and perhaps can offer tips? --
I understand the retry issue. The problem is there is not reason *why* they should not get delivered, or at least none I can find. If I restart the SMTP service these go out right away. If I send using my old mercury mail server messages send right away. I'm trying to figure out why there is a delay in outgoing messages to the blackberry addresses on this exchange server. On other e-mails that delay on sending there is a messages saying why "unable to bind to the connection server in DNS" or "the Remote server did not respond to a connection attempt" for the blackberries it says "no additonal infomation is available" -- Thanks for the help! Did you look at the logs?

See: How to Enable and Interpret the Smtp.log File: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;155455 From the log snippet, I can't see any errors. It looks like all got delivered properly.
