iis smtp nntp : Odd POP problem with logons

I've a straight forward IIS SMTP/POP3 configuration. A while ago a
user was unable to logon to get to his POP account. This went on for a
few days. Now that user account is working, and another one is doing
the same thing: no response from the server messages.

The SMPT/POP server's log does not show a logon attempt, or any other
error messages in the log! (We all know how little the POP3 server
logs, too... <g>)

Additional: it only happens with Outlook. ANother mail client can
access the account OK. This outlook has many accounts on the same
server, all work but the one, all worked fine for some time
(months...) then this problem started happening.

"final' followup. 100% an Outlook problem not POP3 as I originally
suspected! Not sure why, but recreating the account in Outlook made it
