Suddenly unable to relay; stuck in Queue; unable to connect
I've been reading in here like crazy, without finding a solution. While my
web server reboots, I'll post. What am I missing? Here's my configuration:
- Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4 at dedicated hosting with SBC
- 2 NICs
- ASP web site using CDO for e-mail (not CDONTS)
- mail has been successfully relaying to an in-office Exchange server across
the internet for years. Several weeks ago, it suddenly stopped. All mail
is now stuck in c:\inetpub\mailroot\queue.
- server can browse the internet, and whatismyip.com reports 216.173.225.15
(as expected)
- IIS has SMTP Mail Server set to 10.1.1.10 on port 25
- first NIC has static IP of 10.1.1.10, and a default gateway of 10.1.1.1
specified.
- second NIC has static IP of 172.27.1.68, and NO gateway specified (is this
a problem?)
- SMTP virtual servers are:
o <MachineName>: type is Local (default), Drop directory is
c:\inetpub\mailroot\Drop (which exists and is accessible to Everyone)
o ct.org: type is Remote, SmartHost is 204.60.85.242
- in queue and badmail, I do messages with the following errors: "Unable to
deliver message to the following recipients, due to being unable to connect
successfully to the destination mail server." (the destination adress is
valid)
- nslookup 204.60.85.242 reveals the following, which I think means that
everything is fine:
dns1.dal.sbcidc.com
216.65.193.35
ctmail.ct.org
204.60.85.242
- I am told by the in-office administrator that Exchange server allows
relays from 216.173.225.15, and ISA Server at that location is set to allow
the traffic, too.
- from a DOS prompt, telnet 204.60.85.242 25 reports: "220
ctcmail.ctdomain.org Microsoft ESMTP Mail Service, Version: 6.0.3790.0 ready
at Mon , 30 Jan 2006 10:15:37 -05:00" but I get a cursor which does not
respond to any keyboard input (not even Ctrl-C)
- I turned on SMTP logging last week. It doesn't seem to have any recent
information in it; I don't understand why it lags so much. Also, why would
I ever see this server trying to send some mail "from" inkmore.com? Maybe
this is an indication of an MX record problem?
