iis smtp nntp : smtp receiving issue

Hi all, we have a Windows 2000 Pro machine that resides on the same local
network as our Exchange server. It has a bunch of software programs running
that control and connect our phone and voice mail systems. One of the
software systems has the ability to send email notifications whenever a new
voice mail arrives. But we are having smtp issues. Apparently the exchange
server is rejecting the message and we cannot determine why. Below are the
logs from the phone system and the SMTP server on the Exchange server.

Phone System:-

Do you have a firewall in between the two servers?

Are you using a smart remote host to forward the emails to your Exchange
server? If so, does the remote server allow for relaying?

NO to that question as well. The client sits in the same network as the
Exchange server...

The smart host has nothing to do with what network it's on. In configuring
SMTP under IIS, you can select a smart host to handle the emails from that
server. In some cases, if you're using a mail server such as Exchange, if
it's not configure to accept relaying emails, then they will not be sent.
With respect to the message you received, however, it doesn't necessarily
sound like this is the problem, but since these servers are on the same
network, the inability to relay may be the issue at hand.

When I configure the smart host on the SMTP/IIS server, I usually use
127.0.0.1, forcing the SMTP server to send the email directly. Noting that
this server needs to configure to allow for emails from localhost, you
should still be able to send emails to a local Exchange server even if the
email comes from the SMTP server. Again, this all depends your the
configure of your Exchange server.

If I'm following what you've said here, you're talking about putting
in [127.0.0.1] as smarthost when you do not, in fact, have any other
SMTP daemons listening on the box. This entry is unnecessary.

There's no need have any smarthost setting if you're expecting the
mailserver to perform DNS-based delivery to domains that are not
hard-coded Remote Domains -- that's the default behavior. In fact,
having the setting in place just forces the daemon to go through loop
detection every time you send a message, wasting resources.

Or perhaps I misinterpreted what you were saying.
