Enabling incoming news feed for NNTP server

Enabling incoming news feed for NNTP server Paul Steele

iis smtp nntp:
We operate a news server on an aging FreeBSD system. It houses some of our
own locally created groups as well as all the regular internet newsgroups
except for the alt.binaries feeds. We currently get the news groups from the
University of Oregon. We want to move the service to a Windows box using the
IIS NNTP server. I've done some initial investigation but I cannot find a
way to have the NNTP service pull the news groups from an external source
like we can with our FreeBSD set up. Is this even possible with the IIS NNTP
service?

Long ago, I did a test with MS engineer. IIS 6.0 NNTP does support this.
You need to google around,

I've made some progress, but have hit another roadblock. The next step in
the process to move from our FreeBSD NNTP server to a Windows NNTP server is
to initiate a feed from the FreeBDS NNTP server to the new server in order
to populate all the local groups. We've set up our unix server to allow
feeds, and I've added a pull feed to the IIS server using the rfeed.vbs
command. The first part of the process appears to have worked. All
newsgroups have been created on the windows box, including our local ones.
However, no articles have been transferred. In the event log I keep getting
the message:

"The virtual server 1 has completed an active feed from/to news.acadiau.ca.
Status is FAILURE."

I've done many google searches trying to find out what the cause of this
error is, but all I've managed to find is other people asking the same
question with no answer. I can't find anything at Microsoft either. Does
anyone know what this error means?

No idea. when you configure rfeed.vbs, it said succesfully applied or
configured?
what about the status code in the nntp log file?

This is going to be tough, as you are the second guy I know that trying to
set this up :)

rfeed said the feed was successfully added, and there was an entry in the
event log that confirmed this. The nntp log file has the following info:

131.162.200.55, <feed>, 3/24/2006, 9:23:06, NNTPSVC1, ISIS, 131.162.200.77,

The entry "NEWNEWS command disabled by administrator" looks suspicious, but
I haven't been able to find any info on it. This sequence repeats every 15
minutes.

Yupe, looks like the remote server disabled the NEWNEWS command.
Hence, your nntp unable to obtain list of new articles... and no news
postings pull from the server.
