Configuring outbound IP for SMTP service

Configuring outbound IP for SMTP service Mike Cain

iis smtp nntp:
Using Win2K3 server - apparently for outbound email the SMTP service is
using the default IP address on the NIC card as the IP seen by the receiving
mail server. How can I change this?

For example my server has multiple IPs defined. The default NIC is
x.x.x.10. So when email servers receive email sent by my server it shows
this:
Received: from outgoing.mydomain.com ([x.x.x.10])

However, I want it to show a different IP defined on that server, like this:
Received: from
outgoing.mydomain.com ([x.x.x.25])

I have the IP for the virtual smtp service set to use .25 but it doesn't
matter - the headers when seen by incoming
mail servers show x.x.x.10.This creates a problem because of spam checks and
RDNS. For instance x.x.x.10 resolves to www.mydomain.com. So when mail
servers look up RDNS for x.x.x.10 they get www.mydomain.com insetad of
outgoing.mydomain.com.

This can cause spam checks to fail.I configured the SMTP service to use
outgoing.mydomain.com as the outbound mail server name,
which is being transmitted properly. Its just that I want it to use the .25
IP instead of .10.How can this be configured? I've used other 3rd party mail
server software and they provide a setting that can be used to have the mail
server report whatever NIC on the machine you want it to use. Does the MS
SMTP service provide this flexibility?

p.s. I though that the SMTP service was defaulting to the primary configured
IP on the box. However recently I rebooted and now its using a different IP
on the box (seemingly random)...

Thanks!

Mike

In the SMTP Properties dialog, on the General tab, set your IP address.

Sorry but I thought I mentioned this in my original post - I have tried
changing the IP on that Properties General tab. However it has NO affect
whatsoever on the outbound IP address it sends in the headers.

Any ideas?

Do you have a smart host IP address set?

Thanks for the help. Yes. The IP of the smart host does show up in the
header as part of the chain of servers the message was rounted from.
However the orignating mail server's IP is still in that chain and causing
problems because its fixed on one IP and I need it to use another. Also I
tried not haivng it use the smart host and it still causes the unwanted IP
to be listed as the IP of the mail server instead of another IP on the box I
want it to use.

Any suggestions?

Can you switch the order of the IPs on the NIC card?
