Spam filter for the SMTP Service ? PL

iis smtp nntp:
Does anyone know of a free working spam filter for the Windows 2003 SMTP
Service ? I found two free versions but both of them have discontinued
development and they are very buggy.

We are a very small company and cannot afford the sometimes ridicolous
prices for something that should have built in from start, the solutions we
have looked at would cost somewhere around $1000 since they usually charge
per mailbox.

I don't know why MS couldnt have put in a simple spam filter, the DNSBL and
SURLBL databases are free to use for anyone.

We are simply using the SMTP service and the built in POP3 service in
Windows 2003 Server Standard. I guess $1000 is not that much but it just
seems like it never ends, it's always another $1000 needed for some software
that does something we feel should have been there from the start :-/

You can't even turn off the insane mailing of NDR:s in the SMTP service, it
sends one out basically for every email sent to a non existing mailbox,
which means thousands of emails all the time and then they usually bounce
back again.

To get rid of the NDR:s we used a VBScript that hooked into the server and
checked for the mailbox but we ran into issues and had to remove it.

Well, Microsoft has a habit of getting sued when they start including things
for free in the OS.
If you are running Exchange 2003, then there is the IMF add-on which is
free.

I suppose you need to look at what spam filtering gains your business. If
it's going to save you $1000 a year, in terms of increased productivity,
perhaps it's worth investing in something.

What are you using for mailserver software? And what are you using for your
email clients? Maybe we can suggest some kind of free or low-cost add on?

Cheers
Ken

Might want to look at using a third party mail server, or Exchange.

We decided to go with MailEnable Pro www.mailenable.com

Simply because it had a bunch of features for a fraction of the cost for
exchange or other solutions.

There is even a standard version which is free, finally a real alternative
to the built in service for small companys !

You could have done more searching and found a ton of alternatives...
