Got it cased Sandy - you won't believe it :-0
The default gateway on the mail server is supposed to be;
192.168.1.25 - instead it was;
182.168.1.25 - groan.........
Thing is, that machine's been in use for years so I have no idea
how/why/when that happened. The default gateway has always been .25
Nevertheless..... that's what happened.
So, when you tried to connect the firewall passed the connection through and
the Exchange machine did receive your connection. The problem is that every
time it tried to communicate back to you it was trying to send that
information through a non-existent gateway.
As such, it was only half communicating - it could hear but could not speak
:-)
Sorry about that - the DG is basically written in stone here - it never
changes and how/when that could have happened is beyond me.
Best & Thanks for your efforts on this normally basic issue :-)
