What error was generated?

Did you restart IIS before attempting this action?

Hi Sandy and Volz

I'm having exactly the same problem mentioned and more: after applying the
hotfix I can’t manage the list of computers that may connect and relay
through the default “SMTP Virtual Server”, because after doing the changes to
the list of IP and pressing “Apply”, I receive an “Unspecified Error” message
box.

From what I’ve been investigating, it seems that the issue is related to a
new version of the “adsiis.dll” located in “C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv”,
which is installed by the KB946517 that Volz mentioned. I installed that
particular HotFix following the instructions mentioned in the article
http://blogs.technet.com/apurdon/archive/2008/01/31/is-your-sharepoint-server-reporting-event-ids-7076-6398-6482.aspx,
because my Intranet box (with MOSS 2007) was writing several events related
to “Attempted to read or write protected memory” and this HotFix was supposed
to fix it (and it did it, but know I see it messed up with the SMTP)

The SMTP Virtual server is working fine for now, but I wanted to change some
properties as a part of a security policy and I don’t know how.

Any advice would be appreciated,

Rummy.

Have you swapped in the old version of adsiis.dll? It does seem like
you've pinpointed the offending file.

No, I haven't because that will probably solve this particular error, but
it'll bring back the issue that causes that the event log of my server fills
up with "Attempted to read or write protected memory" events.

What I need to find out is if MS knows about this buggy hotfix that they
post and if there's some workaround.

Gracias Sandford :)

I am having same issue. It broke my ability to send alerts in SMTP cause it
changed config settings in SMTP and won't allow me to change back.

Anyway, there is a post on this on google
(http://blogs.msdn.com/vijaysk/archive/2008/04/14/issue-smtp-configuration-unspecified-error.aspx)
and it seems that there is a HOTFIX "coming soon" for this issue.

I hope real soon, like days not months. If anyone sees the hotfix posted on
MSDN, please reply to this message so I can find out about it, cuase
desperately need it to patch my server.

From article:

The problem is likely to occur when you have the HOTFIX 946517 on the
server. The HOTFIX 946517 updates the Adsiis.dll to fix a thread contention
issue seen when you run MOSS 2007 Timer Service.

Currently if you are running SMTP on a server with MOSS 2007 you will have
to uninstall the HOTFIX 946517 to get your SMTP working. Note that the SMTP
service it self is not affected by this HOTFIX and keeps running. But you
cannot make changes like Relay restrictions. A fix for this problem will be
made available shortly in the form of a HOTFIX and published as KB 950426

Solution/HTFIX available! mlopong

Everyone who is having this issue. This HOTFIX is not yet posted on the web.
But in frustration, I called Microsoft support. Told then I needed a HOTFIX
for KB 950426 and they had it available! They emailed me the HOTFIX.

Its a pain to have to call, but if you ask for
KB Article Number(s): 950426 they will have it. They will ask for your
server OS, x64 or x84, etc and they should be able to package it for you and
you can get from website.

I called the MS 1-800 number available on Support site.

Just called for the Hotfix and was told Microsoft has pulled this Hotfix as
it was causing other problems. They would not provide it to me even after
explaining I was stuck.

Thanks Microsoft!

Our TAM from Microsoft told us that he talked to Vijayshinva Karnure, the
engineer that is working with this hotfix and he told him a similar version
of the problem.

So there’s nothing much to than just wait for the hotfix to be publish and
solve this damn problem once and for all.

For now, I decided to install de SMTP service in other server and keep going
on with my live :(
