would like to use MS SQL 7 over WAN and LAN

sql server (alternate):
we have an older version of MS SQL (7?) server running on a
LAN..pretty much a RedHat network and our admin refuses to help with
MS problems (don't blame him)

question:

a) can a remote computer user (running MS Access in Windows)view the
DB?
b) if so what do i have to do to the SQL server box if it is running
behind a linux firewall?
c) or what do i beg my IT guy to do in order for us to get to the
internal IP address that is hidden behind the firewalls IP

our core issue that this MS SQL server solution is only temporary and
we will switching over to MY SQL soon...but until the money is
available we need to limp along with our Access Application (which
reads the SQL server data on a LAN right now)
