Hello all

I got a good one for all of you SQL server masters.

After installing SQL Server 2000 Developer version on laptop, runing
Win XP, it ran fine for a few days.

Suddenly, one day I boot and the SQL Service Manager, when double
clicked on shows NOTHING in the Server field nor in the Services
field. Usually it would showing something like this:

Server : Machine_name\Server_name
Services: SQL Server

I even clicked the pull down menu for both and they are both BLANK.

I went to Windows services and checked to see if the SQL server
service was running, and it was. So, my SQL server service is set to
Automatic and it is runing when I boot, but for some reason the
service Manager can not see anything, or there is something preventing
it from listing the instances.

If enter the machine name and server name manually into the Server
field and refresh, the icone turns green and it recognizes that there
is a server running.

I do not want to do this manually every time.

Any idea of what the service manager is coming up blank after each
boot?????

Please help.

It's caused by a virus.

Reinstall Windows and SQL Server.

Although you say you're using Developer Edition, you might want to
check this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;814132

If you've installed MSDE also (as part of Visual Studio, for example),
then it might cause this problem.
