sql server (microsoft) : how to troubleshoot connection problems

I have a server (running sql server 2000) used by several offices. The
connect to it over the Intenet, using ADO.Net. This has been working for
more than 6 months, without any apparent problems.

For the past couple of weeks, we've been having intermittant connections.

Here's one symptom:

I can connect using Enterprise Manager, see tables, etc. But if I click
Tools\Query Analyzer, it often (9 times out of ten) times out and fails with
"SQL Server does not exist or access denied." But 1 time out of 10 it does
connect.

The server's network configuration is set for TCP/IP port 1433, and named
pipes, and my client network configuration for that server is tcp/ip, port
1433.

I've tried all the things I've found on the Internet about this problem,
have the latest service pack (4) on the server.

How can I go about troublshooting this problem?

I would be grateful for any ideas or suggestions!

Are you using Windows Authentication or SQL logon?

Something you could try , which is:
1)In your Server Network Utility, disable Named Pipes , retstart , and see
whether this has any impact
