Hello. I have recently installed a second PC and it is connected via a LAN.
I have SQL Server 2000 installed on my main PC but I wanted to access the
SQL databases in the server from the other PC. Main PC running XP Pro, other
PC running 98SE. I have installed the client tools on the 98SE but am unable
to connect to the Server on the XP machine. Is there instructions somewhere
on how to set up the client on a second machine? TIA, Jim.

TIA, Jim

Ok, got it, but you have to provide some error message to help you.

Jens, in the Client machine, in the window "Connect to SQL Server", I use
SQL Server authentication with Login name: sa and the Password: *******.
When I click OK, I get this error message: Unable to connect to \\JIMRIC\SQL
Server
Server Mssg 17, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or
access denied. Since I am the Administrator on both of my machines, I
believe it is the [ODBC SQL Server Driver] that is the cause of my failure
to connect to the server but I do not know how to correct it. Can you tell
me, please? I have not done this before so I need instructions for an idiot
(step by step). \\JIMRIC\ is the name of the computer that has the SQL
Server 2000 installed on it. TIA, Jim.

Thanks again Jens, for your help.
I did not install a named instance, just the default.
OSQL -L from the 98SE PC gets me "None".
OSQL -L from the XP Pro PC gets me "Server: (local)"
I have set up mixed mode authentication on the XP Pro PC.
I have the Client Services set up on the XP Pro PC because I did not have
the second 98SE PC until just recently. When I start the "SQL Query
Analyzer" from the XP Pro PC, I have no trouble connecting to the SQL Server
using sa and password *******.
I didn't find any help on the link that you furnished. Jim.

Please turn off temporary the firewall to see if it is a problem of closed
ports, but do not only deactivate it, stop the servive to be sure that its
not running.

Did you really checked out that articles for help :

841252 How to manually enable TCP/IP on Windows XP Service Pack 2 for SQL
Server 2000

839980 How to use a script to programmatically open ports for SQL Server to
use on systems that are running Windows XP Service Pack 2

839269 You may not be able to connect to an instance of SQL Server that is
configured to use the Named Pipes server network library on a computer that
is running Windows XP Service Pack 2

Check in the server network utility if TCP/IP is enabled and the server is
not hided, open up the appropiate ports on the XP Workstation (could be
blocked to the network) and try again. If you are not sure of this is a
Windows 98SE problem (guess it isn´t) try connected with a third workstation
(if you have one) to the server to see wehter it is a problem with closed
ports from the firewall.

Ok, i think you messed up something, you have to procide the name of the
sqlserver not the UNC Path to it.
So try to set up the connection to

Server: JIMRIC
Username: sa
Password: *******

If you installed a named instances this should be
Server: JIMRIC\NameoftheInstance
Username: sa
Password: *******

If you are not sure if you can conenct from the client to the server you can
run the command line util which makes a broadcast in the network to
determine the active SQL Servers. it is --> OSQL -L (works well if you
di´dn´t hide the servers)

SQL Authentication won´t work if you didn´t set up mixed mode authentication
on Sql Server.

If you have further questions, don´t hesitate asking. As i don´t know how
long i will monitor this post, you can also write me an EMail, i will post
the answers right to the group then.

Jens, I have tried to do what you have suggested. If I take a snapshot of
different areas of my PC and upload them to my website and furnish you the
URL so that you can view the snapshots, will you view them? I've had one MVP
refuse to click on any outside link. I believe that if I show you different
areas and how my PCs are set up that you will be better able to help me get
the 98SE PC connected to the XP Pro PC. What say you? Jim.
