HELP: Hard Disk Upgrade for SQL Cluster

HELP: Hard Disk Upgrade for SQL Cluster Travis
10/29/2003 3:47:17 PM
sql server clustering:
Background:
I have inherited a new SQL infrastructure based on a 2
node SQL Server 2000 cluster and an HP StorageWorks
Modular SAN Array 1000. The SAN was configured with (14)
36GB drives arranged in 2 arrays. The first array is
attached is 12 disks arranged in a RAID 5 config. The
last 2 drives are a mirrored set assigned to 1 logical
partition that is used for replication to the second node.

Task:
I have been instructed to replace the 36GB mirrored array
with (2) 72GB drives tomorrow night. I'm assuming that I
have to break the mirror, add the new drives, format and
reconfigure the mirror and logical partition, but would
feel much better if someone who has done this before could
offer me a reliable check list or plan of action.

The problem is that within a SAN, you generally don't mix
drive types within an enclosure, and if you do, they act
like the smaller ones. That will vary by manufacturer, so
even if you replace 4 36s with 2 72s, it may still be the
equivalent of 2 36s.

What is the business requirement dictating you change the
configuration?
