sql server clustering : Windows 2003 cluster

Hi,

I am running SQL2000 (SP3 applied) on a cluster running in Windows
2003.
I have 2 problems: I am either unable to run a backup from a
maintenance plan, or I am unable to failover to the other server.

According to article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815431&Product=sql2k
I should configure a named pipe to be able to install SP3, which I
did. I also found out that I was not able to failover if the named
pipe configuration is removed. Fine!

But then I am unable to perform a full backup (defined from a
maintenance plan). According to article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;827452 named
pipe should not be configured. If I remove the named pipe
configuration, backup works fine. But then I am screwed. How can I
have my backup work as well as my failover?

Thanks!

Hi Paul Dube,

The named pipe alias workaround is just required during the setup of SQL Server 2000 EE NAMED virtual instance in Windows 2003 server. After the installation, the
named pipe is not required.

From your description, you do have two issues.

You wrote "I also found out that I was not able to failover if the named
pipe configuration is removed. Fine!"

It appears that all your SQL Server resources come online on the primary node but fails on the secondary node. Was SP3 for SQL Server 2000 installed successfully on
all the cluster nodes? If SP3 was not successfully installed on all nodes then this may be one reason why failover doesn't work on the other node. Give the exact steps
that you took to install SP3. Also, look at the errors that you are getting in the NT Event Logs and SQL logs when you try to failover.

You wrote "But then I am unable to perform a full backup (defined from a
maintenance plan). According to article

The named pipe alias is not required after you apply SP3. So, removing named pipes should not affect your failover. But if you do want to use named pipes then, you
can contact Microsoft Product Support Services and ask for the hotfix in 827452. The hotfix will fix the issue ONLY if you are having the same issue as described in the
article. You will not be charged for the hotfix. If you need additional help to troubleshoot your issue, then you will be charged.

Hello Paul Dube,

You should check the sqlsp#.log files on both your cluster nodes to check
if SQL Server 2000 SP3 installed correctly.

At the very bottom it should say Installed successfully if SP3 did get
installed correctly. Check for any errors, exit codes not equal to 0 and
that will let you know if you had issues. If there were issues then I would
suggest you conduct searches on http://support.microsoft.com to see if
their any known issues else contact Microsoft PSS
(http://support.microsoft.com) for further assistance.

It seems from the description of the issue your SQL Cluster setup may not
be in the correct state, did the backup/failover work prior to you applying
SP3.
