I wanted to configure Failover cluster for SQL Server 2000 on Windows 2000 advanced servers

I have only 2 no.s of windows 2000 advanced server m/cs. I dont have any shared disks and SCSI drives. Can I still configure the Failover clustering

I would like to know more about the need for the shared disks in the Failover clustering

Please shed some light

Hello Babu -
On windows clustered environment, all the components are viewed as a
resource which is owned by a single node at any point of time (shared
nothing architecture). So in the case of SQL server, the resources involved
are Ip address, IP name (virtual server name), Sql server service, agent
service, shared disks and other optional components like FTS and MSDTC.
The availability of SQL server is ensured by moving the resources to other
node in case of a node failure.
The need for shared disk is to ensure all the data and log files are
accessible by the new owner after the failover. On the contrary, imagine
there are no shared disks and you store your data in the local disk and
assume there is a failure - so how would the other node access the data and
log files?
