sql server clustering : Server 2003, and Server 2000 , Can both OS's be in the same cluster running sql2000?

I would think there should not be a problem, but I just want to make
sure.

We have 2 win 2k servers in lets say Cluster 1 (running sql 2000). We
are wanting to upgrade these 2k servers to 2003 server (obviously
running sql 2000 since we don't have a choice). Our plan is to fail one
server over to the other, rebuild (not upgrade) it to 2003 , and then
fail the vsql server back over to it. Then do the same with the next
one. This in theory should work ok since it's both sql2000, however,
since it's the OS part of it that manages the cluster, I was wondering
if there would be any issues during the time that we have 1 server on
windows 2000 server and 1 server on windows 2003 server and we try to
get them to re-cluster together if you will.

Has anyone done this, or does anyone see a potential problem with doing
this??

Also on a side note.. Would you guys upgrade to 2003 or would you do a
full re-install?

Hi,

read

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/enterprise/proddocs/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/enterprise/proddocs/en-us/upgrading_from_w2k.asp?frame=true

carefully and update to SQL Server service pack 3a before starting because
W2003 does not support earlier SQL Server versions.

Do both.

Upgrade one node. Fail the cluster over to it and upgrade the other. Evict
one node and remove it from SQL using the SQL install CD. Rebuild it and
add it back to the cluster. Add service pack 3a and any hotfixes as well.
Fail over to this node and repeat. It is a double whammy, but you get the
best of both worlds. Smooth upgrade and a clean install. Also, make sure
you have current 2003 drivers and software for your shared storage. Many
times, the 2000 versions will not work. I know this is the case with EMC
Clariion systems.

oh man thanks for the tip on the emc stuff.. we have the dell cx 400's
(which are emc).. Yea we are def. going to do a full compatability test
before we do this, but we wanted to double check this first hurdle about
the two different os's could do this.. Thanks for your notes.. thinking
that through that makes perfect sense why it would work..

thx
