Setting up sql 2K cluster (single instance) on win2003

Does the path for the program files have to reside
locally i.e on the local disk subsystem and not the
shared disks ?

Also my internal array i.e. local disks are broken up
into C and D drive.. When i install SQL on node 1 and
specify to use D drive for my program files, will the sql
install automatically install the program files on drive
D on node 2 as well ? Im setting up a single instance and

Hassan,

You are asking a lot of Clustering 101 questions that can be answered simply
by just reading the available documentation. There is a lot of information
available for clustering on not only the MS site but others as well. I
suggest you start with this document and it's associated links:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/maintain/failclus.mspx
MS also has a set of CD's or DVD's on High Availability that walk you
through all the aspects of Clustering that I would highly recommend you see.

I did glance at that article but i just needed some clarification to that.
Also , why do we need 2 virtual cluster names and IP addresses i.e for
Windows and SQL..

Can i not use the same virtual name/IP i created during the windows
clustering during the SQL installation ? Please provide some details

SQL Clustering is based on local binaries and arbitrated owner shared data.

SQL needs to install on the same location on all local disks. Your nodes
should be identical or the cluster won't be supportable.

BTW, Andrew is correct,. please read the documentation carefully and
completely. You will avoid many problems now and in the future. SQL
Clustering is a part of a high availability strategy. Careful planning and
training are elements just as important as the hardware setup in an true
enterprise strategy.
