You would think this would be relatively staight forward as they are
both Microsoft products.

Now the issue is that when trying to run the sql 2000 setup the
installtion always bombs out out when I enter the remote information
ie either the designated sql service account or the administrator's
details.
Both the accounts are members of the local administrators group on
both nodes of the cluster.
I am installing sql 2000 sp2 but have downloaded sp3a, from which I
have run the cliconfig.exe to create a Named Instance attached to the
sql virtual server.
I have setup msdtc to run in the resource group in cluster manager,
trying to run the install both with the service online an off.
I have even copied the installtion to a local disk and ran it from
there in a vain attempt get thing working.

Any help would be much appreciated as when the installion stops it
doesn't create any log files so I'm unable to work out why this is
happening.

Have you tried failing over to the other node and running setup from ther?
When you say setup bombs out; what exactly do you mean?

What installation is the setup failing?

You wrote "I am installing sql 2000 sp2 but have downloaded sp3a, from which I

sql virtual server."

Have you already installed SQL Server 2000 virtual server successfully? If no, then you need to do that first. And then install SP3a for SQL Server 2000.

Review the following Microsoft Webcast for troubleshooting the setup

Troubleshooting SQL 2000 Virtual Server and Service Pack Setups for Failover Clustering
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/servicedesks/webcasts/wcd020703/wcdblurb020703.asp

This webcast will atleast get you started with the setup files that you need to be looking at to troubleshoot the issue further.

If the setup log files don't help, post them so that one can review and help you.
