Hello,

The KB article 174799 " How to Install Service Packs in a Cluster http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;174799" is for applying Windows Service pack
on server clusters. This does not apply for SQL Server 2000 service packs.

The Readme for SQL Server 2000 SP3a Service Pack (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/servicepacks/SQL/2000/SP3ReadMe.asp) has the
information for applying service pack on server cluster.

Before applying SP3a, please review the pre-installation checklist

INF: SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 or Service Pack 3a Pre-Installation Checklist for SQL Server 2000 Virtual Server for Failover Clustering
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811168

I am cutting and pasting the instructions from SP3a Readme below for your reference (But I highly recommend to review the Readme)

3.10 Installing on a Failover Cluster
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/servicepacks/SQL/2000/SP3ReadMe.asp#_installing_on_a_failover_cluster

The following information applies only to SQL Server 2000 components that are part of a failover cluster.

To install the service pack on a failover cluster

If any resources have been added with dependencies on SQL Server resources, those dependencies must either be removed or taken offline before you install SP3a.
If you do not do this, the installation of SP3a may cause those dependent resources to fail over.

Run the service pack from the node that owns the group containing the virtual server that you are going to upgrade. This installs the service pack files on all nodes in the
failover cluster.

In the Setup dialog box, type the name of the virtual server that you are upgrading.

Keep all nodes of the cluster online during setup. This ensures that the upgrade is applied to each node of the cluster.

If you removed dependencies or took resources offline in Step 1 above, add back the dependencies or bring the resources back online.

Note Setup might require rebooting of the failover cluster nodes. This replaces the files that were in use during setup with the updated files.

Additional Information:

Link for SP3a (english) for SQL Server 2000
http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/7/5/875e38ea-e582-4ee2-9485-b459cd9c0082/sql2ksp3.exe

Apart from installing SP3a, I highly recommend you to apply SQL Server 2000 (32-bit) Security Patch MS03-031
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9814AE9D-BD44-40C5-ADD3-B8C99618E68D&displaylang=en
Do test SP3a and MS03-031 on a test cluster first to make sure that everything works as expected and only then apply to your production cluster.
