Hi,
I have HP 5000 EVA SAN & Microsoft 2003 based cluster servers. I was trying
to install SQL 2000 on my cluster as per the instructions given on your
webcast (How to install SQL 200 on Windows 2003). I created named pipe alias
& run the setup & at the end got message saying Virtual server created
successfully. However in my clusteradmin I don't see any entry for the
virtual server & also can not ping it. Surprisingly on the second node I can
see SQL 2000 files installed. Installation was run on the first node which
has no entries for SQL 2000. Also the shared folder (from SAN) on the network
for data files is blank. Please help as to how I can resolve the issue & make
a proper install. Also is there any way to remove SQL installation done &
delete the virtual server. Any urgent help is appreciated.

Hi Geoff,
We have HP SAN & some more than 30 Cluster servers connected which is
working fine. One of my colleague has already deployed SQL 2000 on windows
2003 but is no more here to help. Infact for the first time in my life i was
trying to install SQL & that too on Windows 2003 cluster. Everything was
going ok as per the webcast slides. Somwhow after the installation I could
see that the node on which I was installing did not have all resources online
local. I feel that is why SQL for installed partially on 2nd node & node on
the node where I run setup. Is it possible to for the setup to do it on its
own as I was very much sure of having resources locally. I need to delete SQL
installed on 2nd node & the instance. When I try to insert CD to uninstall
there is no remove option as well. Also when I try to install again it says
instance already there which is anyway not functional. I am not sure how did
I get message Virtual server installation successful & there is not entry at
all in Clusteradmin for any virtual server resource. Please help..

This should help:

How to manually remove SQL Server 2000 default, named, or virtual instance
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290991

Also, it sounds like you are running your SAN in NAS mode where it presents
network file shares to the host computers. This is not a supported
configuration. You need to run the SAN as a direct-attached storage device
for SQL clustering.

It definitely sounds like a broken installation. The Kb article I linked to
details all the steps to manually remove a SQL installation, including a
Virtual server on a cluster. Carefully follow the steps to remove a virtual
server and you will be back where you were before the blown installation.

Hi,
I managed to do a clean uninstall from the both nodes thanks to KB article.
Now when I try to install with a newly created named instance with cliconfig
utilty a per the procedure, setp runs fine & creates a virtual server which I
can ping while install going on. Trouble starts when at the end it comes with
message saying cluster reosurce can not come online. At this point when I
start clusteradmin on second node i find that SQL group has all the entries
for resources needed but SQL server resource shows failed. Also Sql server
agent & fulltext shows offline which I guess loads once SQL server resource
comes online. In sql server resource I see that it has data disk entry bit no
logs disk entry. The data & log disks are of the SAN & path for data disk is
specified while install. Not sure why resource does not come online. When I
go back to node one & click okay on the error it does uninstall of the
virtual server & all sql resources. Please help as not sure whats going wrong.

In cliconfig I enabled TCPip (default settings) & names pipe protocol. Alias
was kept all okay only in names pipe i just put unstance name instead of long
\\.\..sql\.. some path..

Hi,

I am able to ping okay when the error pops up on the node I am running
setup. Apart from if i can ping or no, I am not sure why cluster resources
do not come online even though I can see them in clusteradmin from second
node. Infact for the SQL Group the setup creates automatci nly SQL Server,
Agent ^ Search resource do not come online. If I say okay for the error
displayed on the node running setup, it uninstallas total installation from
both the nodes. I need to figureout why instalation fails at the last minutes
when it is trying to online SQL server resource. It appeasr Failed. Somehow
log dosk entry does not appear in the SQL Server resource. SQL agent & Search
I feel would come online once SQL server resource comes online.

To install SP4 or SP3, I need to have installation successful. In my case it
gets stuck at he last screen trying to bring resources online.

You won't be able to ping the virtual server until after you apply SP3a.
Windows 2003 will not allow SQL to connect via the TCP/IP libraries until
SP3a has been applied in order to prevent Slammer attacks.

Attach the setup log files (found in the Windows folder of each node).

If you are using Outlook express, hit the paperclip icon on the toolbar.
The log files are plain-text human readable. You can just cut and past them
into the post.

Hi,

I have successfully managed to install Virtual cluster server with SP4 but
have a new problem. I am now trying to setup Veritas Enterprise Vault server
which will use this database. While running setup I can connect to the
virtual server but does not let me make dataabase entry. I can select the
path as \\sqlvirtualserver\s$\folder but when I say okay, it gies error
saying error creating remote vault directory database 0x80040e14. After
installaing SQl server, I have taken out entries which I had made manually in
cliconfig.exe utility for named pipe instance. Resources on SQL Group are
fine & can do safe failover. I can ping & login to to sql cluster virtual
server as well. The ID I am using to load application was the same I used to
load SQL server & is domain admin & I have choose windows authentication
mode. Hust not able to see why I can not create database. I could register
the server from another clients which shows SQL server config ok. Please let
me knows.

Sandeep
