The closer it is to Identical, the better your life will be, although it is
technically possible to cluster unlike hardware.

Hi,
Our company has a HP Proliant DL380 and we need another server to establish
a clustered environment. Should we but exactly the same server with the same
hardware configuration or if the new server is listed in HCL will be enough?
Thanks in advance,
Leila

If the server is in the cluster section of the HCL, then you can deploy it
for clustering. There is no requirement that the servers have to be the
same or even from the same manufacturer.

I disagree. One thing about the HCL is it is not a "grab bag". Each system
on there not only has to be on the list but provided in a cluster-ready
configuration from the manufacturer. That pretty much eliminates
mix-n-match clusters. The big exception is where the storage manufacturer
is different than the host manufacturer which is actually pretty common in
middle to high end clustered systems. Given that the goal of a clustered
system is to increase system availability, and having an asymmetrical system
would increase complexity and thus decrease availability, you might find
yourself decreasing availability with an improperly built cluster.
