Most likely your install disk is SQL 2000, not SQL 2000a. SQL 2000a will
have an i386 folder with a 2003 date while SQL 2000 will have a 2000 year
date. I have seen many Windows 2003 systems fail to install SQL 2000 and
work fine with SQL 2000a. You will still need the alias information to
complete the install.

Installation was successful after creating the named pipes alias on the
second cluster node also. KB 815431 only refers to creating the alias on the
primary node.
