I understand that Microsoft do not support SQL Server 2005 failover
clusters where the cluster instances are also domain controllers. Can
anyone tell me the reason for this? Is it to do with performance,
resilience, or some other reason?

I have to install MSDTC on an Active/Passive cluster. I got instructions
from microsoft's website on how to enable MSDTC:
